Every graduate is special. This year we had two extraordinary graduates, Grace Thlawur and Deborah Ishaya, who risked their lives to receive an education. These frightened, optimistic and brave girls were kidnapped and managed to escape captivity by Boko Haram, a group who’s name translates in their local dialect as “western education is a sin.” A horrific event that began for them in the middle of the night on April 15th, 2014, when armed men posing as Nigerian military, there to protect them, herded them from their school before looting and burning it. The boarding school, which had recently been closed to protect students from attacks that had become commonplace in the region, had only just reopened the day before to allow students to take their final exams.
In spite of the many challenges they’ve faced on their journey to acquire an education and to live free from oppression, Grace and Deborah are capable, intelligent and kind young women with the world open before them. We wish them well and hope they will always remember that they have family here at the Fairfax Christian School.
