Mrs. Lorna Coffey has taught at FCS for five years. She teaches and leads the Concert Band, our Middle School music program. Students must play in Concert Band for at least two years between 5th and 8th grade.
As part of our music program, Mrs. Coffey proposed several activities for Concert Band which have become FCS traditions: playing for residents of Sunrise Senior Living at Reston Town Center, participating in the “Music in the Parks” competition at Hershey Park and performing an annual Concert on the Green.
Mrs. Coffey begins the year by teaching Concert Band students in sections based on their chosen musical instruments. Students learn to properly handle and maintain their instruments to professional standards. Rehearsal as a complete band starts before the Fall Concert and continues throughout the year, culminating in the “Music at the Parks” band competition and other spring musical performances.
Watching students progress from beginners to mature musicians is Mrs. Coffey’s favorite aspect of teaching Concert Band. Each of her students plays a valuable role in the group. These young musicians learn to work both as individuals and as parts of a cohesive whole. The technical and social skills they develop in Concert Band will help them throughout their lives.
Mrs. Coffey appreciates the high standards of the Fairfax Christian School. Both teachers and students are expected to reach their full potential. An education at FCS, founded on a Christian worldview, ministers to the mental, physical and spiritual well-being of each student as a complete person.
