Homework Tips for a Great 2017–2018 School Year
The school year is just beginning, so now is the time to start strong with good study habits. Here are a few tips to get you going.
Choose your homework space.
You should set aside a place where you will complete your homework every day. This space should have good lighting, all the supplies you need and WiFi access (for online assignments). Make sure this area is quiet and free from distractions: no TV, loud music, phone calls or siblings.

Completing large assignments before the due date and in small portions throughout the week is easy and will reduce stress. Keeping track of your assignments lets you choose how to spend your study time wisely and effectively.
Schedule study time.
With planning and diligence, you should be able to finish your daily homework before bedtime. Start your homework as soon as you get home and keep going until you’re finished. Stay focused and avoid distractions.
One proven technique for studying effectively is the Pomodoro Method: for every twenty–five minutes of studying, take a five–minute break to stretch, have a snack and refresh yourself before continuing. There are several Pomodoro–friendly timing apps available for iPads.
If you’re having trouble getting your homework done within a reasonable amount of time, you may need to cut down on after–school activities. Extracurricular activities are exactly that: extra. They should never prevent you from maintaining a good grade.
Follow the Honor Code.
At the beginning of the year, we have every student sign the Honor Code Pledge. By doing so, you agree to do your own homework and not to present others’ work as your own. Your parents should never complete assignments for you. Never copy the answers from your peers or let them copy your work. Homework isn’t “busywork”; it’s an essential part of your education.
No matter how old you are, sleep is critical for success. Don’t stay up late on school nights. It is considered impolite to call, text or email your friends after 9:00pm, since they need their sleep as well. You should get eight to twelve hours of sleep.
Ask for help.
If you’re struggling, don’t be afraid to ask your teachers for help. We also have an Academic Success Program from 2:45pm to 4:15pm, Monday through Thursday.
