The truth is that no ranking is perfectly objective. Each measures something different, from the number of Nobel laureate alumni to post-graduation salaries.

So do rankings really matter? Yes, more than ever.

Higher education is in the middle of a realignment in how academics are taught, funded, and valued. A self-directed student can now learn almost anything for free with AI. But information access was never the binding constraint. Libraries, textbooks, and open courseware already made content free, and completion rates for self-directed online courses have always run in the single digits. AI lowers the cost of explanation.
